Having fun outdoors encourages respect for the environment. These simple tips teach kids to preserve the earth’s resources and help instill good environmental habits.

Save Water

  • Run the tap so water comes out in a stream only as thick as a pencil.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Use refillable sports bottles instead of buying bottled water.
  • Keep a pitcher in the refrigerator for cold water without running the tap.
  • Water the lawn after 6pm or before 10am. More water will be absorbed into the soil instead of evaporating. And remember: don’t water sidewalks and driveways.

Reduce Waste

  • Pack lunches and snacks in reusable containers.
  • Use reusable shopping bags whenever possible.
  • Ask children to help sort newspapers, magazines and cardboard for recycling.
  • Grow some vegetables. Gardening helps eliminate waste created by transportation and packaging, and gives kids a direct connection to the environment. Whether you have a big plot or a single container in a sunny spot, fresh vegetables are delicious and easy to grow.
  • Start a compost pile, and ask your kids to help. Explain that when food and lawn scraps are composted, they can be returned to the soil to help other things grow.

Conserve Energy

  • Walk to the store, library or park. Make it an adventure! Count the number of dogs, or the different kinds of trees you see along the way.
  • Turn off lights and electronics when you leave the room.
